DHYG 1331 Preclinical Dental Hygiene Three hours credit. Preclinical Dental Hygiene provides the foundational knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients. Emphasis on principles, procedures, and professionalism for performing comprehensive oral prophylaxis. One hour of lecture and 7 hours laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 1301 Orofacial Anatomy, Histology & Embryology Three hours credit. A study of histology and embryology of oral tissues, gross anatomy of the head and neck, tooth morphology, and individual tooth identification. Two hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 1304 Dental Radiology Three hours credit. Radiology is the study of radiation physics, hygiene, and safety theories. Emphasis on the fundamentals of oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of radiographs. Includes exposure of intra-oral radiographs, quality assurance, radiographic interpretation, patient selection criteria, and other ancillary radiographic techniques. Two hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 1227 Preventive Dental Hygiene Care Two hours credit. Preventive Dental Hygiene Care is the study of the dental hygienist in the dental health care system and the basic concepts of disease prevention and health promotion. Communication and behavior modification skills are emphasized to facilitate the role of the dental hygienist as an educator. Two hours of lecture each week. DHYG 1261 Clinical 1 Dental Hygiene Two hours credit. A basic type of health professions work-based instruction that helps students synthesize new knowledge, apply previous knowledge, or gain experience managing the workflow. Practical experience is simultaneously related to theory. Close and/or direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience. Twelve hours of clinic each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 2201 Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care 1 Two hours credit. Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care 1 is an introduction to dental hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient. Emphasizes supplemental instrumentation techniques. One hour lecture and three hours laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 1211 Periodontology Two hours credit. Periodontology is the study of normal and diseased periodontium to include the structural, functional, and environmental factors. Emphasis on etiology, pathology, treatment modalities, and therapeutic and preventive periodontics in a contemporary private practice setting. Two hours lecture each week. DHYG 1319 Dental Materials Three hours credit. Study of dental materials including the physical and chemical properties and application of the various materials used in dentistry. Student experiences include manipulation of dental materials in the lab setting. Two hours lecture and three hours of laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. Two hours credit. A study of general nutrition and nutritional biochemistry with emphasis on the effects of nutrition and dental health. Analysis of diet and application of counseling strategies to assist the patient in attaining and maintaining optimum oral health are stressed. Two hours lecture each week. DHYG 1235 Pharmacology for the Dental Hygienist Two hours credit .A study of the classes of drugs and their uses, actions, interactions, side effects, contraindications, and oral manifestations with emphasis on dental applications. Two hours lecture each week. DHYG 2262 Clinical 2 Dental Hygiene Two hours credit. An intermediate type of health professions work-based instruction that helps students synthesize new knowledge, apply previous knowledge, or gain experience managing the workflow. Practical experience is simultaneously related to theory. Close and/or direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. DHYG 2231 Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care 2 Two hours credit. Acontinuation of dental hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient. Emphasizes advanced instrumentation techniques. One hour lecture and three hours laboratory each week. Laboratory fees apply. DHYG 1339 General and Oral Pathology Three hours credit. General and Oral Pathology is the general study of disturbances in human body development, diseases of the body, and disease prevention measures. There is an emphasis on the oral cavity and associated structures. Three hours lecture each week. DHYG 1215 Community Dentistry Planning Two hours credit. Study of the principles and concepts of community public health and dental health education with an emphasis on community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation. Two hours lecture. DHYG 2363 Clinical 3 Dental Hygiene Three hours credit. An advanced type of health professions work-based instruction that helps students synthesize new knowledge, apply previous knowledge, or gain experience managing the workflow. Practical experience is simultaneously related to theory. Close and/or direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional (faculty or preceptor), generally in a clinical setting. Fifteen clinical hours each week. DHYG 1165 Community Dentistry Practicum One credit hour. An external learning experience where students gain practical experience in a discipline, enhance skills and integrate knowledge. Practicum emphasizes methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in various community settings. Seven hours each week. DHYG 1123 Dental Hygiene Practice One hour credit. Dental Hygiene Practice is the examination of the dental hygienist's role in practice settings including dental office management, employment considerations, resume preparation, and job interviewing. Emphasis on the laws governing the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene and the ethical standards established by the dental hygiene profession. One hour of lecture each week.
