ASSOCIATE OF ARTS (A.A.) DEGREE ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE (A.S.) DEGREE

NTCC offers courses designed for transfer in the following fields: accounting, agriculture, art, biology, business administration, chemistry, computer science, English, education, health, history, physical education and recreation, journalism, mathematics, music, physics, political science, psychology, sociology, speech, pre-dental studies, pre-law studies, pre-medical studies, theatre, and others. Students may earn either an A.A. or an A.S. degree in the major courses of study listed on the following pages.

ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE (A.A.S.) DEGREE

Workforce programs provide opportunities for students to develop skills to enter a variety of careers immediately upon completion of a degree or a certificate. By working closely with employers in agriculture, business, industry, health agencies, and public agencies, the College has designed workforce programs so students will learn the specific skills needed for meaningful careers. Associate of Applied Science degrees require the equivalent of two years as a full-time student. They comprise technical skill courses, general education, support courses, and capstone experiences. Although workforce programs are primarily designed for immediate employment, students may transfer academic courses to universities and may transfer workforce courses in cases where specific articulation agreements have been developed. Students should consult with their academic advisors or counselors to determine the transferability of

A.A.S. programs.

WORKFORCE EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Workforce Education certificate programs are designed to provide specific skills for students to seek immediate employment in a variety of careers in agriculture, business, industry, health, and public agencies. Also, students who are already employed may use these programs for in-service training. Workforce Education certificate programs vary from the equivalent of one semester to two years of full-time study. The typical certificate program requires the equivalent of one year of full-time study. However, students may pursue these programs on a part-time basis.

Degree Plans

The degree plans on the following pages reflect course requirements for the respective programs. However, the sequence of the program is suggested only and reflects when the courses will be normally offered. Students must meet prerequisite requirements where applicable.

Note: Probable completion times as listed on the following programs are dependent upon the course offerings of the College and the enrollment status of the student.

Upon completion of the program of study, the student will be eligible to apply for the NCLEX-PN and with the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure as a LVN.

ADMISSIONS

The VN program has limited space and not every student who applies is admitted. Applications are available January through mid March annually. Selection is based on evidence of the following:

SELECTION CRITERIA

  1. High School Diploma or GED Completion.

  2. The applicant is required to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and mathematical skills through the Quick-THEA, THEA or ACCUPLACER or equivalent testing. The candidate must demonstrate reading and writing skills at college level and math at the Intermediate algebra level. Even if a student is TSI waived or exempt, this test must be taken.

  3. The candidate will demonstrate clear written communication skills and thought processes. This will be demonstrated in a written questionnaire provided to the student. Selection consideration includes grammar, spelling, punctuation, neatness, legibility, clarity of expression, lyrical thought, and appropriate professional communication.

  4. Candidates are encouraged to participate in college work that will expand their knowledge in the discipline of nursing. Courses not included in the degree plan (up to 15 hours) are considered. These include: Math, Science, Foreign Language, English, Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, and Medical Terminology.

  5. Selection consideration is given to candidates with co-requisites completed on the degree plan, including Introduction to Psychology and Anatomy & Physiology I and II.

  6. Consideration towards admission is granted by the admissions committee for work experience in any health or medically related job or volunteer position. Examples include, but are not limited to nurse aide, hospice volunteer, med-aide, pharmacy technician or EMT.

  7. Consideration towards admission is given to the applicant's residence in the Northeast Texas Community College district.

Application deadline is the 15th of March annually. Enrollment is limited to 36 students per year. Applicants are notified of their acceptance status in May. Students are encouraged to submit financial aid requests for grants or scholarships by April 15 of each year.

FOLLOWING ACCEPTANCE TO THE VN PROGRAM:

The student is responsible for submitting the following documentation prior to participation in clinical courses:

a.
Proof, on college provided forms, of mental and physical health to practice nursing safely, and current immunization status including hepatitis B immunization. All examination and immunization costs are at the student's expense.
b.
Criminal history screening demonstrating compliance with the Board of Nursing Standards and practices. This is at the student's expense. Students with a positive criminal history will be required to file a declaratory order with the Board of Nursing prior to beginning clinical course work.
c.
Current CPR health provider's certification. This certification must be current throughout enrollment in clinical courses or withdrawal could result. This certification must be AHA or Red Cross.
d.
Certain clinical sites require random drug screening and criminal history checks prior to attendance. These screenings will be performed by staff of a clinical facility after the student is enrolled. Inability to produce a clean drug screen will result in failure of course work.

PROGRESSION IN VN PROGRAM

All general academic and support courses must be taken prior to, or concurrently with, the nursing courses listed. All nursing courses must be taken sequentially. A grade of "C" or above in all general academic courses, support courses, and nursing courses on the degree plan must be maintained for progression to the next nursing course. If a student fails any VNSG course, they must start the nursing course over again from the beginning of the sequence.

TRANSFER/SUBSTITUTION

Transfer is based on a space available basis. Transfer students should seek an appointment with a counselor or the Director of Nursing to discuss course by course transfer and acceptance towards meeting the requirements for this degree. Upon request for transfer consideration, students should submit a transcript and either a college catalog or course syllabi to evaluate course content and suitability. Some general academic and support courses may be eligible for course substitutions for closely related courses or courses with similar outcomes. This decision will be made by the Director of Nursing and the Admissions committee upon submission in writing of the request and an official transcript and college catalog or syllabi for this course.

Students wishing to transfer nursing course work from another college will be asked to demonstrate skill proficiency and retention of content for previous nursing courses. Students wishing to transfer will be asked to submit documentation of clinical performance from the transferring program. Courses must be transferred within two years of the last nursing course.

GRADUATION/LICENSURE

To receive a certificate of completion in Vocational Nursing, students must pass every course in the degree plan with a "C" or above and an overall GPA of 2.0. Completion of course work does not guarantee licensure. Upon completion students may apply to take the National Council for Licensure Examination. In addition, students must apply for licensure in the state where they wish to practice. Students who have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor, who have a history of certain psychiatric disorders or who have a history of alcohol or other substance use may not be eligible for licensure. For further information, contact the Director of Nursing for a copy of the rules from the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.

PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT PROGRAM

The Northeast Texas Community College PTA program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education; a division of the American Physical Therapy Association. Northeast Texas Community College offers a two-year Associate Degree of Applied Science; and upon graduation, students will be eligible to apply and sit for the PTA licensing exam administered by the state of Texas Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners. Graduates must pass the state board exam to practice as a PTA in the state of Texas.

Even though Northeast Texas Community College has an open-door policy, the Physical Therapist Assistant Program must limit its enrollment due to the limited classroom space and the availability of clinical affiliations. Applicants must meet minimum academic standards to be considered for admission. The application packet is posted on the NTCC Physical Therapist Assistant Program website which can be located at http://www.ntcc.edu/Academics/ PhysicalTherAsst/index.htm. The deadline for application to the PTA program is March 31.

The admissions procedure is based on a point system utilizing the following criteria

Grade points – In A.A.S. curriculum courses for PTA Program 20%
Anatomy and Physiology GPA 10%
Observation Hours 10%
Essay 10%
Reference Forms 10%
HOBET Test 10%
Bonus Points (up to 4 possible) 10%
Applicants have the opportunity to add bonus points by:
Completion of all support classes = 1
Having completed BIOL 1406/1408 in addition to A&P = 1
Being an in-district resident = 1

Having an advanced degree = 1 point for science, .5 point for other

Once these scores are tabulated, the highest ranking candidates are chosen for an interview. Candidates granted an interview are assigned an onsite writing assignment prior to the formal interview. The onsite writing assignment is evaluated for grammar, punctuation, and organization. All of the questions are asked of each candidate.

The interview scores are then averaged and the final scores compiled.

Onsite Writing 5%

Interview 25%

After the final scores are tabulated, the top 16 students will be offered a place in the class. Eight alternates will also be chosen based on the next ranking scores. All applicants will be notified by mail of the final selection. Those applicants selected for admission will be given an opportunity to accept the position or decline admission for this year. Those applicants not selected will be provided information about the re-application process if requested.

A free practice site is available to assist in preparing to take the HOBET. This site is available at http://www.testprepreview.com. Follow the link on the left for the HOBET. This site is also an access point for practicing many other types of tests including the ACCUPLACER, GED, SAT, and ACT among others.

Northeast Texas Community College will not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, religion, disability or age, its education programs, activities, or employment policies.

TEACHER EDUCATION

The following Associate of Science Degree programs are intended to provide the first two years toward a bachelors’ degree and a teaching certificate. Curricula are listed for Early Childhood through 4th grade, for 4th grade through 8th grade math, and for 8th grade through 12th grade math, because articulation agreements have been developed with Texas A. & M. University at Texarkana in those fields. However, students may use these curriculum plans for preparing for other teacher education fields at other universities. Important: Students should consult with a faculty advisor or a counselor to design a specific teacher education program of study. With a nationwide and a statewide shortage of teachers, there are excellent career opportunities in teaching.
