Theatre Northeast will open its 26th season this month with Arthur Miller’s drama,
All My Sons.
The show will be October 28, 29 and 30 at 7:30 p.m. and October 31 at
2:05 p.m. in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of
Northeast Texas Community College.
All My Sons marks the
100th production by Theatre Northeast (the NTCC student theatre group)
since the Whatley Center opened 19 years ago. Director, Doug Hoppock,
said that he wanted to make this milestone special by producing a play
that he has never done, but always wanted to do.
“
All My Sons
is very near and dear to my heart. It was the first of Arthur Miller’s
plays that I ever read back when I was in high school and it solidified
within me a quest to read all of his works. When I met our Theatre
Northeast students this fall, I earnestly felt that we have the talent
and maturity to give this great play a valid and vivid production,”
Hoppock said.
The play won the 1947 Tony Award for Best Play and
solidified Miller’s place in history as one of America’s greatest
playwrights. It is set in the peaceful backyard of successful business
owner Joe Keller. Joe strives for the American Dream, but two years
after World War II’s end, his family still suffers from its aftershocks.
When Chris, the elder son, announces his plan to marry his still
missing-in-action brother’s fiancée, tremors erupt and crater the
foundation of the family. Terrible secrets are revealed and
responsibility and accountability for ones’ actions are exacted. This
classic play about a family’s struggle resonates as strongly today as
ever as Miller asks us to consider to whom we owe our greatest
responsibility; our family or our country.
