Health Informatics is an evolving specialization that links information technology, communications, and healthcare to improve the quality and safety of patient care. Health Information Specialists (HIS) work in healthcare organizations to establish and maintain information systems. This involves ensuring that the systems comply with company policies, government regulations, and legal and ethical practices. The HIS is involved with research of technology systems and planning for implementation of the chosen system. Implementation of the system will also include testing of the system before implementation, de-bugging, and optimizing the system as necessary. The HIS will also troubleshoot systems whenever issues are encountered and provide support to users throughout the organization. The specialist may be directly involved with employee training, determining needs, and developing action plans.
