CSAI visits Shelby Performance in Indiana

CSAI team with Shelby trucks

If you ask most people what the Shelby brand is known for, they would probably reply with something related to cars, especially Ford Mustangs. An avid enthusiast would probably be aware of many different types of vehicles that Carroll Shelby played a significant role in their creation. In 2026, Ford and Shelby American celebrate many anniversaries, most notably the 60th anniversary of the Ford win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race, when three Ford GT40’s crossed the finish line to win the race. A more recent anniversary is that of the Shelby truck line that began production in 2016. Ten years later, the Shelby truck line constitutes the majority of Shelby American vehicle sales. The majority of these trucks are constructed in a brand new facility in Bristol, Indiana by a company rightly named Shelby Performance.

Thanks to a conversation that started during the annual Shelby Bash in Las Vegas in April, the Carroll Shelby Automotive Institute (CSAI) and Shelby Performance began to discuss opportunities to work together to promote the automotive industry to young people looking into that career field. In early July, Austin Maness, Director of CSAI and Dr Jon McCullough, Vice President of Advancement at Northeast Texas Community College, paid a visit to the Shelby Performance facility in Bristol. During the tour, the Operations Manager, Ryan Bell, provided a behind the scenes tour of the facility, the processes, and even some interaction with much of the workforce that were building trucks. “The commitment-to-excellence culture at Shelby Performance is undeniable. You can see the level of focus and care each employee takes when handling any part of the vehicle,” Maness said.

While there were plenty of beautiful Shelby trucks to talk about, most of the conversation during the tour was about the type of employee and their skillset that the company valued. Mr Bell stated that the company is interested in a potential team member that has certain ‘soft skills’. "At Shelby Performance, we believe exceptional vehicles begin with exceptional people." Bell went on to say that “experienced” automotive professionals may have developed some undesirable habits that may have been useful at other jobs, but could be a hindrance when applied to the company’s strict adherence to quality control. He added that certain behaviors and attitudes, such as punctuality, personal appearance, and how a person takes care of their tools, are all indicators of how successful an employee can be at Shelby Performance.

Shelby American and Shelby Performance recently announced the new, 2026 year model Shelby Super Snake trucks, with the potential of more Shelby truck versions in the future. Many more conversations between CSAI and Shelby Performance are planned to discuss opportunities for developing tomorrow’s automotive specialists.
