The Eagles softball team moved to 3-7 Saturday as they picked up a split in a double header with visiting Connors State.
With both teams battling frigid temperatures, it was the Eagles that came away with a 3-2 victory in game one.
The Eagles took advantage of their three hits to score their three runs in the contest and held off the Cowgirls late to get the win.
The Cowgirls grabbed a quick lead in the top of the second inning on a fielder?s choice play with the bases loaded but the Eagles answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jessica Miller got the rally going with a one-out single to left before stealing second and moving to third on a passed ball. Adoria Askew drew a walk to put runners at the corners and an error on a ball hit by Kelsey Kirkland allowed Miller and Askew to score to put the Eagles up 2-1. A fly ball by Ashley Basham allowed Kirkland to score from third and the Eagles led 3-2 after two innings of play.
A double, a passed ball and an RBI single allowed Connors State to pull within one run in the top of the fourth inning but the Eagles were able to hold the Cowgirls off the board for the rest of the game to get the victory.
Hannah Holovach (3-1) picked up the win in the pitching circle for the Eagles, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out four and walking two in a complete-game performance.
The Cowgirls again jumped out to a quick lead in the second game of the day, scoring a run on three walks and a passed ball in the opening inning to go up 1-0.
Connor?s State added two more in the top of the third to grab a 3-0 advantage before adding another in the fourth to go up by four runs.
The Eagles finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jessica Garza led off with a single and Christina Martin followed with a walk. A double to left by Katie Holcomb brought Garza around to score and a ground ball to second by Miller scored Martin to cut the Cowgirl lead to 4-2.
The Eagles would come no closer, though, as Connors State added two more runs in the top of the seventh and went on to win 6-2.
Shelby Sorrells took the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk in three innings of action.
The Eagles will be in action again Saturday as they host Grayson County for a double-header beginning at 1 p.m.
