Northeast Texas Community College recently held the 2013 McGraw-Hill Poster Contest at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. This event allows local high school and college students to present original research projects to a panel of judges. Eighteen students participated in this year's contest.
Stephani Calderon, a sophomore NTCC Presidential Scholar from Mount Pleasant, won first prize for her work on Sovereign Default. She received $400 and a $175 coupon for McGraw-Hill textbooks, which was presented by Amy Errthum, Learning Technology Consultant for McGraw-Hill. Ricky Huitema, of Pittsburg, placed second for his project that looked at Texas political history. He received $300. Alisha Richardson, of Avinger, received third place and $200 for her work on attitudes towards music. Noah Griffin, of Pittsburg, finished fourth and received $100 for his Caldwell Prize-winning work on the Father of Prohibition, Morris Sheppard.†
The other students who presented work were:†Andrew Austin of Mount Pleasant, Jacob Brantley of Daingerfield, Thuong Bui of Winnsboro, Matthew Jordan of Pittsburg, Whitney McIntosh of Winnsboro, Stephen Milburn (5th†place honorable mention) of Mount Pleasant, Emily Parker of Pittsburg, Jesse Rivera of Mount Vernon, Jessikah Salaverria of Mount Vernon, Aaron Screws of Como-Pickton, Rehan Shahid of Mount Pleasant, Samantha Trickey of Mount Pleasant, Andrea Wells of Daingerfield,†Aaron Wilson of Pittsburg, and Chloe Wood of Mount Pleasant.
The community judges this year included for the first time two alumni of NTCC Honors who had competed previously in poster contests:†Kristin Ellermann, former Mount Pleasant Valedictorian who has just returned from her stay with the Peace Corps at Akhlatsikhe, in the Republic of Georgia by the Black Sea; and†Damico Hill, who has just graduated from Baylor, and has been accepted into Physician?s Assistant School.† NTCC also welcomed members of the community for judging again this year:†Carolyn Adkins, Leland and Wanda Cockrill, Joy Cooper (Honors Committee Member) Lisa Ellermann, Pete Hairston, Karen Harmon, Tyler Moore, Rev. Dr. Wayne Renning, Jearld Mowery and Mary Lou Russell, Noureen Ronchetto, and Jerry Wesson.
