Does math scare you? If so, you?re not alone! Many students need extra help getting ready for college-level math classes and a new statewide initiative could help you get there sooner.
The New Mathways Project (NMP) is a statewide effort to reduce the number of developmental math courses leading to successful achievement of the college-level math credit required for a college degree.† NTCC has joined the NMP along with other Texas community colleges to begin a pilot program in fall 2014.
?Traditionally, developmental math classes have focused on algebra almost exclusively. Many degree programs now require college-level statistics instead of college algebra. The NMP provides students in those programs a more efficient path to statistics that gives them a higher chance for success,? Dr. Paula Wilhite, NTCC Professor of Mathematics, said.
This new statistics pathway is designed for students who plan to major in an allied health field. In future semesters, this pathway will be explored to include other non-STEM majors such as business or humanities. A study skills course (EDUC 1300 Learning Framework) and a developmental math course (MATH 0411 Pre-statistics) are scheduled for the fall 2014 semester to be followed by a college-level course in statistics (MATH 1342 Introductory Statistics) in the spring 2015 semester.
