The Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College will host a vocal performance by the East Texas Men in Harmony Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7:30 p.m. This is the first of three shows in a special Sounds of Northeast Texas series highlighting talented musicians from the area.
The East Texas Men in Harmony is approaching its tenth year as a performing chorus. During this time, they have become one of the top choruses in the five-state Southwestern District of the International Barbershop Harmony Society. They have won three first-place awards in choruses of similar size and three third-place medals in overall competition against much larger groups. They were also recently honored as the outstanding large chorus for their musical achievement and community service programs.
"There are so many phenomenal musicians in our region and we are excited to host a special series to highlight their talents at the Whatley Center," Carolyn Franks, Director of the Whatley Center, said.
The group is comprised of men from more than 20 East Texas towns, including Mount Pleasant and Pittsburg. The members collectively travel approximately 2,400 miles each week to attend the Thursday rehearsals at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. They range in age from 16 to 91. Many of the guys have been singing barbershop for decades as members of quartets and other choruses. Some members have only recently been introduced to this unique form of entertainment. It isn't just the love to sing that brings them together, it?s the fellowshipping, friendships and memories made along the way.
Seats are $15 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets will be available at the door or reservations can be made by calling the Whatley Center box office at 903-434-8181.
