Students and faculty in the Honors Program at Northeast Texas Community College recently participated in their Spring 2017 Honors Trip. The group traveled to Dallas, where they visited North Park Center, the Perot Museum, the Nasher Sclupture Center, Fuddrucker?s Restaurant and the Granville Theatre in Garland to see a performance of Tantalus. This is the 20th semester trip the group has taken since 2008.

The trip was made possible due to the concerted, ongoing support of Drs. Jim and Paula Archer and other friends of Honors Northeast. Those attending the trip (top to right and down to right) were William Jones, William Fox, Aubry Buchanan, Cailee Davidson, Alecia Spurlin, Ryan-Rose Mendoza, †Academic Success Coach Director, Erika Garza, Presley McClendon, Kassandra Martinez, Adriana Rodriguez, Emmalea Shaw, Chesney Davis, Honors Professor, Karyn Skaar, Honors Director, Dr. Andrew Yox, Brenda Godoy, Yami Zuniga, Leivy Zuniga, Melody Mott, Rachel Jordan, and Cassidy Watkins.

It was the first honors trip taken by three special members of the entourage: †Yami Zuniga, who joined honors this spring thanks to a scholarship paid for by donations from several friends of honors here; Dr. Karyn Skaar who recently became an honors professor in place of the retiring Dr. Shirley Clay; and Erika Garza who has been instrumental in providing a more concerted mentoring support system for students at the college.

?It was another exhilarating day, and hiking with a group of curious young people around the Nasher sculpture court was like a visit to wonderland. These trips have been an amazing facet of our experience here,? Yox, Director of Honors Northeast, said. ?We would not have had these opportunities without the assiduous generosity of Dr. Jim and Dr. Paula Archer,? as well as other friends of honors.

Humanities secretary, Delbra Anthony and other members of the college administration have also played a key role in making all 20 trips possible.† Dr. Mary Hearron has driven students on thirteen of these trips.

Honors Northeast is readying its members for its fifth feature-length film premiere, on Sam Houston and the fate of the Texas Cherokee, at the Whatley Center on February 17 at 7 p.m.† The program is also accepting applications for the 2017-2018 academic year. They are due March 1. Contact Yox at ayox@ntcc.edu for details.
