Jordan Chapin, a student at Northeast Texas Community College, has recently been named the 2022 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar.  With this recognition, she will receive a $1,500 scholarship.

The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship is presented to the Texas applicant with the highest score from Phi Theta Kappa’s Spring Scholarship Application, which help new Phi Theta Kappa Members defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs.

A native of Winnsboro, Texas, Chapin is a chemistry major.  She has plans of transferring to UT Tyler to attend pharmacy school.  While there, she will strive to complete her future goals of connecting her love for people and science and work as a clinical pharmacist.  In addition to pharmacy school, Chapin hopes to own as many goats as possible, as they hold special place in her heart.

“When I received the email, I was so excited! I couldn’t believe it.  I waited for what felt like forever to hear back about the results.  In my mind, I finally gave up because I thought I didn’t win anything.  You can imagine my relief when I saw the email.” Chapin is quoted in her excitement upon getting the wonderful news that she was named for this honor.

Chapin is the seventh Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar from NTCC.  Previous winners include Davin Whatley (2021), Haley Bucsanyi (2020), Mercedes Collins (2019), Jasmin Garcia (2018), Chesney Davis (2017), and Scott Wilhite (2015).

Dr. Mary Hood served as Texas Regional Coordinator for 18 years and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa’s Board of Directors at the time of her death in 2011.  The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship was established in her memory, providing scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members in Texas.
