Board of Trustees swears in new board member, names lone finalist for president

The Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) Board of Trustees held its regular April meeting on May 6th. The meeting was pushed back due to the ongoing presidential search process. All board members were present.

The meeting opened with Camp County Judge A.J. Mason swearing in Brian Applegate (pictured), of Camp County, to Place 2 on the board. The board then entered executive session. Following executive session, the board announced that Dr. Kevin Rose has been named the lone finalist to become the next president of NTCC. President’s Report

In his President’s Report, Clinton gave the following updates:

  • Reported that the Texas Legislative session is going well for community colleges. The full amount requested for by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) for community colleges was included in both the Senate and House versions of the budget bill before being sent to the conference committee. This includes an additional $27 million to cover the increased allocation community colleges will receive for students who transfer to private Texas universities owing to the successful passage of Senate Bill 1786.
  • The Cabinet will begin meeting this week to start the budgeting process for the 2025-2026 academic year. A board budget retreat will be scheduled for some time in June.
  • The campus has been exceptionally busy this time of year with numerous events and celebrations happening. A few of those mentioned include: The Eagle Excellence Awards, a ribbon cutting for the new Eagles Nest Pavilion and unveiling the new 40th anniversary logo and slogan.
  • In athletics news, the NTCC Baseball team will compete in the regional tournament in Brenham starting on May 8th. The Men’s Rodeo Team will compete at the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) in Casper, WY this June.
  • The Foundation raised $123,210 during the month of March and Dr. Jon McCullough, Executive Vice President for Advancement, reported that NTCC raised a record-breaking amount for East Texas Giving Day on April 29th. NTCC brought in $557,833 during the month. He praised Nita May and her development team for their hard work on these efforts.
  • Clinton invited Shirley Dickerson with the Titus County Appraisal District to the podium to make a brief presentation. She gave the board a check for $8,658.75 in excess funds from the 2024 tax year.

The board took action on the following items:

  • Approved consent agenda
  • Approved employee contracts for the 2025-2026 academic year
  • Discussed board evaluation results. Determined that there were three goals to work toward over the next year.
