Northeast Texas Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter, Alpha Mu Chi, has achieved major national recognition for turning undergraduate research into impactful community storytelling.
The chapter’s ambitious project, “40 Years, 40 Stories, 40 Days,” was selected for publication in the latest edition of Civic Scholar: Phi Theta Kappa Journal of Undergraduate Research, making Alpha Mu Chi the only chapter in the entire Texas Region chosen for this distinguished honor.
Civic Scholar is the first national journal of its kind dedicated to showcasing substantive research and community engagement spearheaded entirely by two-year college scholars. Interdisciplinary projects featured in the publication begin with an in-depth investigation into PTK’s annual Honors Study Topic, followed by targeted research questions and real-world initiatives designed to address specific local needs.
Out of chapters nationwide that submitted Hallmark Award entries for their Honors in Action projects, only 15 were selected for publication in the journal.
"Here scholars are conducting research that matters, drawing conclusions that reshape our understanding of the world, and taking action that leaves a lasting impact." Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society headquarters.
Alpha Mu Chi’s award-winning effort, “40 Years, 40 Stories, 40 Days,” brought college history to life through the voices of the people who shaped it.
To complete the project, student members conducted, recorded, and edited detailed interviews with 60 community members, alumni, faculty, and staff, capturing the college’s institutional memory and community heritage through a vibrant multimedia campaign.
