Members of Northeast Texas Community College’s Alpha Mu Chi chapter recently joined fellow Phi Theta Kappa scholars from across the state for the annual Texas Honors Institute, held July 10–12 on the Tyler Junior College campus. Staying on campus for the weekend, students immersed themselves in this year’s thought-provoking theme, “A Seat at the Table: Gathering the Ingredients.”
Throughout the three-day event, attendees participated in five dynamic General Sessions, complemented by small-group seminar breakouts where students from across Texas gathered to dissect presentation themes, share perspectives, and build lasting friendships. Between interactive workshops focused on student success skills and a lively transfer college fair featuring recruiters from across the state, Alpha Mu Chi members had ample opportunity to network and grow as student leaders.
The institute featured an inspiring lineup of speakers who challenged attendees to think deeply about their roles in an evolving world. PTK alumnus and entrepreneur Carlos Acevedo kicked off the first General Session by exploring how rapid technological innovations like artificial intelligence and immersive experiences are reshaping how we live, learn, and work. In the second session, Tianna Faye Soto delivered a moving keynote on authentic self-reflection, encouraging students to honor their unique personal journeys as they step forward with confidence.
Historical context and practical application took center stage during the middle sessions. Dr. Matthew Newton and Professor Mary Linder guided students through stories of migration, connection, and cultural interaction, showing how historical patterns continue to shape modern communities. Next, an expert Honors in Action panel featuring Texas PTK leaders Dr. Sherry Boyd, Dr. Terry Gilmour, Dr. Nick Rangel, and Professor Brandy Jumper shared practical strategies to help chapters design meaningful impact projects for their campuses and communities. Rounding out the weekend, Morgan Hannaleck led the final General Session with a timely message on success and well-being, reminding students that preventing burnout and practicing self-care are essential parts of achieving their goals.
The high point of the weekend for NTCC came during the regional award presentation. Out of only ten prestigious Dr. Mary Hood STAR Scholarships awarded statewide, four were presented to Alpha Mu Chi members. Congratulations to José Fuentes, Emma Mendoza, Sky Bass, and Elena Roach for earning this distinguished honor and representing NTCC so exceptionally on the regional stage.
