By: Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director
Those interested in learning more about cutting-edge issues relating to the history of modern Texas are welcome to a free Lunch & Learn at the Mount Pleasant Public Library, 601 North Madison, Friday, 13 February, 12:15-1:15 p.m.
A sequence of four presentations—all concerning previously untold stories of modern Texas history--will occur in the library’s community room, with free pizza, salad, drinks, and dessert to all who RSVP with Dr. Andrew Yox at ayox@ntcc.edu by 5 p.m. on Thursday, 12 February.
The donors of Honors Northeast, the honors program at NTCC, as well Guadalupe Herrera, Director of the Mount Pleasant Library, and her staff have again made this Lunch & Learn possible. This will be the seventh annual session of the series.
The NTCC scholars who will present have all been accepted for other presentation venues this spring, in Irving at the Texas State Historical Society, and/or Kansas City, for the meeting of the Great Plains Honors Council. The presenters and topics include: Jasmine Landaverde, whose story on “Health and Hispanics” in modern Texas Flier Composed by Cindy Hammonds of NTCC may surprise many who have assumed that lower income levels lead to shorter lifespans; Emma Mendoza, who will examine the woman who made a special 2023 commemorative U.S. quarter as a leading woman of Texas—Jovita Idar. Mendoza will explore the life story of this surprisingly enigmatic character; Manuel Ramirez, who will give a unique assessment of recent environmental trends in Texas; and Johnathan Ventura, this year’s associate producer of the film, Chicano Thermidor: Art and Identity in San Antonio, 1970-1995. This film, the 14th in a series of Honors Northeast efforts, deals with the contested meaning of Mexican American identity in the Texas epicenter of Hispanic culture.
Guests are welcome to ask questions and participate in the discussions at the conclusion of each presentation. Anyone with dietary issues, or questions about the event are welcome to write Dr. Yox using the email above.
