Seven members of the 2010-2011 Northeast Texas Community College softball team were recently named National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athletes.
Chastin Smiddy, Shelby Perry, Christina Martin, Katelyn Holcomb, Ashley Eaves, April Breshears and Reagan Smith all qualified for the honor after finishing the 2010-2011 academic school year with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
?College athletics is about preparing players for the real world and academics are a big part of that,? NTCC head softball coach Jay Terry said. ?Success in the classroom is just as important as success on the field. This is a great honor for these girls and I am very proud of their hard work.?
Smiddy had a 3.5 GPA and finished with a 2-1 record for the Eagles in the pitching circle last season while hitting .229 with 11 RBI and 11 runs scored.
Perry finished the spring 2011 season with a 13-12 record while leading the Eagles pitching staff in starts (25), ERA (3.18) and strikeouts (148). Perry also hit .221 at the plate last season with 20 RBI and earned the award with a 3.7 GPA. Perry is continuing her college softball career at the University of Texas at Tyler.
Martin had a GPA of 3.8 and finished the spring season hitting .333 with 28 RBI. Martin was also second on the team in runs scored with 35 and tied for the team lead in stolen bases with five.
Holcomb hit .252 last season with 16 RBI and 16 runs scored and was tied for the team lead in stolen bases with five. Holcomb had a GPA of 3.6.
Eaves had a GPA of 3.6 while hitting .282 for the Eagles last season. Eaves also finished the season with 13 RBI and scored eight runs.
Breshears finished the 2011 spring season second on the squad at the plate with a batting average of .424 and was also second on the team in RBI with 31. She led the team in runs scored with 43 and was also tied for the team lead in stolen bases with five while maintaining a GPA of 3.5. Breshears was named an All-Conference second team infielder for the spring 2011 season and is currently continuing her college softball career at Angelo State University.
Smith earned the award after finishing the 2010-2011 academic year with a 4.0 GPA at NTCC and a cumulative GPA of 3.69. Smith was 7-11 in the pitching circle for the Eagles last season and was second on the team in starts (18) ERA (3.58) and strikeouts (60). Smith also hit .315 at the plate with 14 RBI and 27 runs scored. She was also tied for second on the team in steals with four.
?These players really set a good example for our other athletes. It is not easy to juggle school and sports, but these ladies manage to excel at both,? Terry said.
