Dr. Melissa Weinbrenner, Northeast Texas Community College†Associate Professor of History and Division Chair of Social Sciences, was recently chosen to serve as a 2015 Phi Theta Kappa Faculty Scholar. Weinbrenner was among only 28†Phi Theta Kappa†advisors nationwide chosen for this honor.†The scholars were selected through a rigorous application process based on knowledge of the 2014/2015 Honors Study Topic,†Frontiers and the Spirit of Exploration, and demonstrated excellence in teaching or administration.
In addition to the strength of their applications, the selection committee also considered where the applicant lives, the Phi Theta Kappa division in which they advise, the teaching or professional discipline and the variety in terms of the number of years the applicant has served as a chapter advisor. The result is a strong, diverse group of Faculty Scholars.
?We congratulate them for being selected to serve and for their willingness and desire to surpass the traditional duties of an advisor by contributing in this manner,? said Susan Edwards, Phi Theta Kappa?s Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs.
Weinbrenner took over leadership of the NTCC Alpha Mu Chi chapter of†Phi Theta Kappa†in May 2010. Since then, the organization has won numerous regional and national awards. In 2014, Alpha Mu Chi was named a Top 100 Chapter internationally. Additionally, Weinbrenner was also recently appointed to the Honors Program Council. This four-year appointment will be spent helping to write the Honors Programming Guide that comes out of†Phi Theta Kappa†headquarters.
Weinbrenner, along with NTCC colleague James McGregor, †also recently completed a non-fiction work†Images of America: Mount Pleasant. The work provides a textual and photographic history of Mount Pleasant, Texas. The work is published by Arcadia Press And is available at the NTCC Bookstore and other local retailers.
