Eagles Baseball clinches tourney spot

The Northeast Texas Community College Eagles secured a spot in the Region

14 playoffs by taking two of three against Panola this weekend. An awesome

effort by Carlos Roman led the Eagles to a 16-11 win over Panola on

Saturday at Panola.

Roman racked up six RBIs on four hits for the Eagles. He doubled in the

first inning, singled in the fourth inning, and homered in the sixth and

seventh innings.

The two teams combined for 27 runs and 31 hits, including 14 extra base

hits. Both bullpens were busy with eight pitchers used in the game as the

skippers of both squads tried to finish it off.

The game was back-and-forth heading into the third, with five lead

changes. The Eagles finally managed to grab the lead after a strong third

inning. A fielder's choice scored Tristan Graham and gave the Eagles the

lead for good. Brendan Keany allowed six runs over five innings but still

recorded the victory, he struck out three, walked one and surrendered

eight hits.

Home runs for the Eagles came when Johnnuelle Ponce homered in the second,

Austin Griffin homered in the seventh, and Roman homered in the sixth and

seventh innings. Ponce had three RBIs, sparking the Eagles to a 7-5

victory in seven innings over Panola on Sunday at Eagle field.

David Sanchez shut down Panola while he was on the rubber. Panola managed

just one hit off of Sanchez, who allowed no earned runs, walked none and

struck out two during his two innings of work. Even though Tanner Buxton

allowed five runs over five innings he still recorded the victory. Buxton

struck out four, walked four and gave up six hits.

The bottom of the first saw the Eagles take an early lead, 3-0. Graham

started the rally for the Eagles with a single. The Eagles pushed more

runs across when Graham scored on an RBI single by Ponce and Padin scored

on a groundout by Dayne Sommer.

Panola matched its one-run third inning with one more in the fourth but it

didn't take long for the Eagles to answer as they scored two runs of their

own in the third on a walk by Ponce and a sacrifice fly by Sommer. The

Eagles went up for good in the fifth, scoring two runs on a two-run home

run by Ponce.

The Eagles hung tough on Sunday but Panola pulled away late and handed the

Eagles a 16-3 defeat during the last of their three game series. Graham

racked up two RBIs on one hit for the Eagles. He tripled in the seventh

inning. Brandon Colbert was the game's losing pitcher. He allowed six runs

in one inning, walked two and struck out none.

Panola never trailed after scoring four runs in the first on four singles.

Panola increased its lead with three runs in the second. Two runs in the

bottom of the third helped the Eagles close their deficit to 7-2. A

sacrifice fly by Graham and an RBI single by Christian Padin gave the NTCC

Eagles life. But, #9 got Roman to ground out to end the inning.
