Mary Smith, a sophomore at Northeast Texas Community College, was recently awarded her sixth scholarship of the school year. Smith, of Gilmer, was presented the Walter B. Cooper Memorial Scholarship at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Leadership Conference October 11 at Texas A&M University College Station. In order to receive this award, students must have an outstanding academic record and exhibit characteristics of a well-rounded member of Phi Theta Kappa and the community at large. Dr. Melissa Fulgham, NTCC Phi Theta Kappa Advisor, said that Smith "embodies the spirit of the scholarship and the organization as a whole." Smith is a full-time student and mother of three who is working toward a degree in early childhood education. The NTCC Alpha Mu Chi Chapter was named a 5-Star Chapter in 2014, putting it among the top chapters in the country. Smith is pictured above (right) with Fulgham.†
