Entries being accepted for Bonnie Spencer essay contest

For students willing to excel in their research papers in history at NTCC again this year, there might be more at the end than an ?A?. For the second year, history at NTCC will feature the Bonnie Spencer Awards for the best two research papers in non-honors classes.† The first-place winner will receive $100, and the second place, $50.† There will be an optional Honorable Mention Prize.

Essays should be at least 1,000 words with correct historical citations.† Professors may nominate their top student essays, or students may nominate their own papers.† The essays should have been written for a fall-of-2016 or a spring-of-2017 history class at NTCC.† Essays should be sent to ayox@ntcc.edu by May 1†at noon. †For questions about the rubric, or format, email Dr. Yox at the address given.† History Professors here, along with Bonnie Spencer, will determine the winners.

Both of last year?s winners, Kassandra Martinez, and Tanika Santos, went on to win other honors: Martinez, presenting her work at the meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council in Seattle, and Santos winning the Walter B. Cooper Scholarship, a state-wide award of Phi Theta Kappa.

The awards are in honor of Bonnie Spencer who in 2002 started the college?s first history club.† She now is an ICU Nurse at Good Shepherd Medical Center, in Longview.
