Ryan-Rose Mendoza, a sophomore at Northeast Texas Community College, has been named a 2017 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each Silver Scholar receives a $1,250 scholarship and a special medallion.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society administers the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Program. Student scholars receive local, state and national recognition at Phi Theta Kappa?s annual convention, being held April 6-8, in Nashville, TN.

High-achieving students are nominated for the award by campus administrators. An independent panel of judges considers academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process. Medallions are awarded to the top students based on†academic achievement, community service, and the quality of numerous essay submissions.

Mendoza plans to transfer to Columbia University or the University of Houston, where she will major in Mass Communications. Ryan is a 2016 Coca-Cola Leader of Promise and recipient of the Dr. Jerry Wesson Scholarship. †She is one of three NTCC students who were named semifinalists for the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. The winners for that award will be announced later this spring. Mendoza is the current President of Alpha Mu Chi, NTCC?s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. She is also an Honors Scholar in Honors Northeast, an officer in the Student Government Association (SGA) and Amigos Unidos and a staff writer for the Eagle student newspaper. She completed an internship for County Line Magazine last summer. †A†member of Who's Who, Ryan is also a†recipient of the Horizon Award and President's Academic Excellence Award. †Ryan also worked as a researcher and unit production manager for the most recent†Honors Film.

?Ryan-Rose became very involved in our Phi Theta Kappa chapter from the very beginning. She is exceptionally talented and brings a high level of enthusiasm that is infectious to those around her,? Dr. Melissa Fulgham, advisor for NTCC?s Alpha Mu Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, said.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of community college students to grow as scholars and leaders. The Society is made up of more than 3.2 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations.
