New Mathways Project underway at NTCC

The New Mathways Project (NMP) is all about student success in achieving career goals. The program is a statewide effort that provides opportunity for students to enroll in a college-level statistics course in only one semester. To be eligible, students must qualify for enrollment in developmental mathematics at the level of beginning algebra or above. Eighteen students are currently enrolled in the two New Mathways courses this fall. The courses include 1) a developmental math course, MATH 0411, Pre-statistics, and 2) a study skills course, EDUC 1300 Learning Framework.

According to the two instructors, Jeanni Pruitt, Associate Faculty Member and Director of College Connection, and Beverly Hinson, Associate Faculty Member, the students are fully-engaged in learning activities that foster skills necessary for their success in a degree program.

Comments from students taking the classes have been overwhelmingly positive:

"We've only covered five lessons, and my fear for math has shrunk. I also feel like I'm becoming a better student every day that goes by!"

"I really like this course because it is a lot different from other math classes. It prepares us to be successful in the real world in our chosen careers."

Early in the year, NTCC joined the NMP along with other Texas community colleges to pilot the program this semester. This new statistics pathway is designed for students who plan to major in an allied health field. The pre-statistics course teaches statistics with needed arithmetic and algebra skills, which are relevant to a major course of study.

In spring 2015, a college-level statistics class (MATH 1342 Introductory Statistics) will be added to the NMP Spring semester schedule in addition to the EDUC Learning Framework and MATH 0411 Pre-statistics classes.
