Northeast Texas Poetry Reading to feature local speakers

The Ninth Annual Northeast Texas Poetry Reading†will be held in the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community College on Friday, Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. The reading will feature two speakers with broad historical interests in our region.

Sid Hicks, a Mount Vernon High School history teacher and regional historian, is a mentor of successful student writers such as Jessica Velazquez, who recently published an article in†Touchstone.††Dr. Jerry Wesson, a former NTCC Vice President, is the†author of†The Miracle on FM 1735 (the definitive history of Northeast Texas Community College) and is an expert on the educational history of our area.

The reading will also feature the six winning authors of the Northeast Texas poetry contest, who will present their poems in person. Dr. Chuck Hamilton, professor of English at NTCC, will chair the proceedings. The contest will help determine what poems best represent, define, evoke, and/or describe our region. †The reading is free and open to the public.
