Mercedes Collins named Gladys Winkle Memorial Honors/Humanities Scholar

Northeast Texas Community College student Mercedes Collins has been named the first Gladys Winkle Memorial Honors/Humanities Scholar. This $2,500 scholarship award goes to a top-ranked honors student who is majoring in a field in the humanities. Collins, who graduated third in her class from Daingerfield High School, is a history major and she is putting her interests and talents to use already in the yearly honors film. She was one of the four student researchers to travel to Austin last May to rehearse the desegregation case of Barbara Conrad in 1957 at the University of Texas’ Dolph Briscoe Center.  She is currently serving as an actress and as a member of the support crew as members of Honors Northeast film the story of Barbara Conrad in Jefferson, Texas.
