A Journey of Determination and Support: My Experience in the NTCC Funeral Service Program
At 35 years old, my life was already full of responsibility. I am a single mother raising my child while also serving as a caregiver to my mother. Balancing family, work, and personal goals is not easy, but I have always believed that pursuing an education would open doors for a better future for my family and myself.
Before attending NTCC, I was enrolled in the Funeral Service Program at Jefferson State Community College. I had high hopes when I started there, but unfortunately, it turned out not to be the right fit for me. I struggled to find any kind of work–life balance while attending that program. Between my responsibilities at home and the demands of school, I often felt overwhelmed and unsupported. I also found it difficult to stay focused because the learning environment did not feel encouraging, and I didn’t feel that my situation as a working mother and caregiver was truly understood. Eventually, I realized that if I wanted to succeed, I needed to find a program that supported students the way I needed to be supported.
That’s when everything changed.
While searching for other Funeral Service programs, I came across the NTCC Funeral Service Program. I decided to reach out to Mrs. Olga Scott simply to ask for information about the program. I was curious about what NTCC had to offer, but I wasn’t expecting what happened next. Mrs. Scott responded quickly and was incredibly helpful from the very beginning. What started as a simple inquiry turned into an opportunity I never expected. Before I knew it, I was enrolled and preparing to begin classes.
I remember thinking to myself, “I only asked for information, and now I’m already in the program!” But looking back, that moment truly changed my life.
From the start, I could tell that NTCC was different. The instructors genuinely care about the success of every student in the program. They don’t just teach the material and leave you to figure everything else out on your own. Instead, they actively support you throughout the entire journey.
One of the things that impressed me the most was how the instructors made themselves available to help. If you struggled with something in class, they were willing to set up Zoom meetings to walk you through the material step by step. That kind of support made a huge difference for someone like me who was juggling multiple responsibilities outside of school.
Even more meaningful was how the instructors stayed connected with students. If someone started falling behind in their classes, they didn’t just ignore it. They would reach out with emails or phone calls to check in and offer help. That level of encouragement meant everything to me. It showed me that my teachers truly cared about my success and were willing to walk alongside me all the way to the finish line.
Knowing that my instructors had my back motivated me to keep pushing forward, even during the most challenging moments. As a single mother and caregiver, there were days when I felt exhausted and wondered how I was going to keep everything together. But the support I received from the NTCC program helped me stay focused and continue working toward my goal.
Graduating from the program was one of the proudest moments of my life. It wasn’t just about earning a degree—it was about proving to myself that I could overcome obstacles and accomplish something meaningful. It also meant a lot to me that my child was able to watch me take this big step and see firsthand what determination and hard work can achieve.
Being able to show my child that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams was incredibly powerful. I wanted my child to see that no matter what challenges life brings, you can still rise above them and build a better future.
The NTCC Funeral Service Program didn’t just give me an education—it gave me confidence, encouragement, and a support system that helped me succeed. I will always be grateful for the opportunity and for the instructors who believed in me and guided me every step of the way.
Choosing NTCC truly changed my life forever, and I’m proud to say that I am a graduate of a program that genuinely cares about its students and their success.
