The mission of Communities In Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Northeast Texas Community College recognizes that in order for many students to be successful in college, they must overcome barriers that exist in lives before they even get to college. Without help in overcoming the obstacles that stand in their path, many students are at-risk of dropping out of school. In 1989, in response to the growing need to address these issues, NTCC implemented Communities In Schools of Northeast Texas (CIS).
As a department within NTCC’s Outreach and Student Services Division, Communities In Schools of Northeast Texas is part of the nation's leading organization dedicated to empowering students to stay in school and achieve in life. CIS places professionals in many of the public schools within the College’s service area, where through school-based coordination, they connect students and their families to critical community resources, tailored to meet local needs. CIS surrounds students with a community of support , empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
Currently working in 42 schools in and around the NTCC service area, Communities In Schools of Northeast Texas serves 12 school districts in 6 counties of rural Northeast Texas, reaching over 16,000 young people with a variety of activities to promote healthy and positive choices, college and career readiness, and helping them stay motivated to succeed in school and achieve in life. Of those young people, CIS works with approximately 3,800 students identified as at-risk of dropping out of school.
Communities In Schools has become the nation's leading dropout prevention organization, and the only one proven to both decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates.
