The Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society has selected Chesney Davis to receive a $1,500 scholarship as the 2017 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar.
A mechanical engineering major, Davis is a Priefert Manufacturing engineering intern, NTCC Presidential Honors Scholar and the Texas Regional Vice President for Phi Theta Kappa.† In addition, Davis serves as a ?Supplemental Instruction? tutor for math, physics, and biology and a volunteer at Titus County Cares.† During the summer, he assists as a baseball camp coach.
?It came as a complete shock, and I'm very honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious scholarship,? said Davis.
He hopes to eventually earn a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering, qualify for a professional engineering certification and become a licensed professional engineer. Davis is familiar with what a mechanical engineering degree entails, as his father does similar work.† In fact, Chesney?s father, Jamie, helped with the initial construction of NTCC in 1983-84.† His mother Brenda, has been another student standout at the college.
"Chesney is an exceptionally motivated student who has taken full advantage of his time at NTCC. His contributions to his Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, his college, and his community have been tremendous. I am delighted to see him honored for his hard work with this scholarship," Dr. Melissa Fulgham, NTCC Phi Theta Kappa Advisor, said.
Dr. Mary Hood served as Texas Regional Coordinator for 18 years and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa?s Board of Directors at the time of her death in 2011. The society?s leaders then established the Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship in her memory, providing scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members in Texas who are still attending community college.
?Chesney has gone on from winning our poetry, poster, and Eckman Awards to a position of regional preeminence in both leadership and scholarship,? Honors Director, Dr. Andrew Yox, said.
The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship is presented to the Texas applicant with the highest score from Phi Theta Kappa?s Spring Scholarship Application, where recipients are chosen for multiple programs from more than 1,000 applicants worldwide to receive in excess of $230,000 in scholarships. Independent judges evaluate the applications based on scholastic achievement, community service, and leadership potential.
Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious honor society recognizing students pursuing two-year degrees. Members participate in leadership development, service and academic activities. Phi Theta Kappa is made up of more than 3 million members and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations. The NTCC Alpha Mu Chi Chapter is recognized as a 5-Star, Distinguished Chapter, putting it among the top chapters in the international Society.
