Quilts by local quilters hang in the Whatley Center foyer in what is now an annual tradition for the NTCC art department.† For the second consecutive year, quilters bring their treasured quilts to share with the community. The exhibit runs from Monday, Nov. 6 through Wednesday, Nov. 29. A reception is scheduled for Wednesday, November 15 at 12:30 p.m. in the Whatley Center foyer, and refreshments will be served.
Seven quilters brought 25 quilts for this exhibit, which is titled†Beyond the Rail Fence. The public is invited to attend.
?I am so excited to see what new beauties the local quilters have created.† I want to thank all of them for sharing their work,? Debbie Strong, NTCC Associate Professor of Art, said.
The quilters are Mary Lou Pemberton and her mother, Betty Harper; Jimme Wood, Joy Lindsay, Cynthia Agan, Tommie Clements, and Nelda Johnson. The art department is proud to showcase this local talent.
Strong said she named the exhibit†Beyond the Rail Fence†because of a quilting pattern called the rail fence.
?There are so many patterns that quilters can follow, but the magic happens when quilters choose their own block arrangements and color palettes. Quilting can be done by hand or by machine; quilts can tell a story as you can see by the Wildlife Quilt by Mary Lou Pemberton. Quilts can share friend and family recipes as seen in the Quilter?s Cookbook quilt by Tommie Clements. I hope to see you admiring the quilts in the Whatley, and I really hope to see you at the reception on November 15, so you can meet the quilters and tell them how much you admire their quilts,? Strong said.
The college will be closed for Thanksgiving break from November 22 through November 24, so the Whatley will be closed at that time.
