Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) offers a TDLR-approved Teen Driver Education Program that prepares new drivers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to navigate Texas roads safely. Our program combines state-required classroom instruction with hands-on behind-the-wheel training, all taught by certified instructors who care about your success.
Program Overview
Our program is fully compliant with Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requirements and includes:
- 32 Hours of Classroom Instruction
- 7 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Instruction with a Certified Instructor
- 7 Hours of In-Car Observation
- 30 Hours of Supervised Practice Driving (10 hours must be at night)
Students will learn essential topics such as Texas traffic laws, road signs, defensive driving, vehicle control, emergency response, and the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving.

Program Breakdown
- Classroom Instruction (32 hours):
- Texas Driving Laws & Traffic Signs
- Vehicle Operation & Basic Maneuvers
- Defensive Driving Techniques
- Driving in Adverse Conditions
- Alcohol, Drug & Distracted Driving Awareness
- Test Prep for Written Exam
- Behind-the-Wheel Instruction (7 hours):
- One-on-one in-car driving sessions
- Practice in residential, urban, and highway environments
- Night driving and emergency maneuver training
- In-Car Observation (7 hours):
- Observe peers and learn from real-time instructor feedback
- Supervised Practice (30 hours):
- Completed with a licensed adult outside the program (parent or guardian is responsible)
- Includes 10 hours of nighttime driving, logged and submitted before the driving test
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Must have a valid Texas learner’s permit prior to behind-the-wheel instruction
- Parent/guardian consent required if under 18
- Must complete all 76 required hours to be eligible for certificate of completion

Northeast Texas Community College is pleased to offer a comprehensive Teen Driver Education course that complies with all Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requirements. Our next scheduled session will begin on Monday, August 4, 2025, and conclude on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
Classroom Instruction:
- Schedule: Monday through Thursday
- Time: 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
- Location: NTCC Continuing Education Classroom (exact room assignment provided upon registration)
Behind-the-Wheel Instruction:
- Following the classroom portion, students will complete seven 2-hour individual driving sessions.
- These sessions will be scheduled directly with the instructor and will begin after the classroom instruction concludes.
- Start dates and times for these sessions will vary based on instructor availability.
State Licensing Eligibility Requirements:
- Per Texas Transportation Code §545.424, all teen drivers must:
- Hold a valid learner’s permit for a minimum of six months, and
- Be at least 16 years of age before they are eligible to take the Skills Test required to obtain a provisional driver’s license.
- This statutory waiting period is non-negotiable and must be observed regardless of when the teen completes their driver education training.
