Program Description and Purpose

Integrated instruction and practice in Spanish language, communication, and intercultural understanding form the foundation of Spanish language studies at Northeast Texas Community College. The Associate of Arts in Spanish (Spanish AA) provides students with a four-course sequence designed to develop proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while building grammatical knowledge, vocabulary, cultural understanding, and intercultural competence. The Spanish AA provides a foundation for students who plan to continue their education at a four-year institution or combine Spanish with another academic or professional field. Students may pursue further study in Spanish, education, linguistics, international studies, communications, business, healthcare, social sciences, humanities, or other disciplines in which language and intercultural competencies are valuable.

Course Delivery Options

Courses are offered in a hybrid format that combines in-person instruction with online coursework and in a fully online format, providing flexible options for students with different educational, employment, and scheduling needs.

Credit and Placement Based on Prior Knowledge and Skills

  • Students seeking credit or placement based on prior Spanish study or proficiency may use NTCC's credit-by-examination process, including the CLEP Spanish language examination, in accordance with applicable college policies. NTCC currently awards credit for SPAN 1411 and SPAN 1412 for a qualifying CLEP Spanish Language score.
  • Students may also submit the results of the AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Spanish Literature and Culture exams via their College Board account to NTCC and directly to the faculty.
  • Students should consult NTCC's Testing Center and academic advising information regarding examination requirements, credit, and appropriate course placement.

AVAILABLE DEGREES:
Spanish, AA

The need for Spanish-language and intercultural skills is particularly relevant in Texas. The 2020 U.S. Census counted 29,145,505 Texas residents, including 11,441,717 residents who identified as Hispanic or Latino—39.3% of the state's population. This demographic measure describes Hispanic or Latino identity and should not be interpreted as a count of Spanish speakers; nevertheless, it demonstrates the cultural and linguistic diversity of the state.

The relevance is apparent in education. In 2024–25, Hispanic students accounted for 53.5% of enrollment in Texas public schools, making Hispanic students the largest racial/ethnic enrollment group in the state's public education system. The need is also relevant in the NTCC service area. Titus County, where NTCC is located, had a 2020 Census population of 31,247, of whom 43.8% identified as Hispanic or Latino. Current Census estimates indicate that the Hispanic or Latino share of the county's population has increased to approximately 46%. In addition, 37.6% of Titus County residents age five and older reported speaking a language other than English at home in the 2020–2024 period.

Career and Community Relevance

Spanish proficiency provides communication and intercultural skills for professionals working with Spanish-speaking individuals, families, students, patients, customers, and communities. These skills can complement career preparation in education, healthcare, business, public service, social services, communications, criminal justice, hospitality, and other fields.

Spanish has significant relevance in the Texas workforce. The Texas Workforce Commission's 2024 workforce-composition report states that Hispanic workers represented 38.6% of the statewide civilian workforce, 55.1% of service/maintenance occupations, and 53.0% of skilled-craft occupations. Healthcare provides another example. Texas community health centers reported 1,859,052 patients in 2024, including 652,620 patients with limited English proficiency (35.1%). The ability to communicate effectively across languages and cultures can therefore contribute to more effective interactions among healthcare professionals, patients, and families.
